MP3 Conversion Errors and How to Fix Them

You pasted a link, ticked the box, pressed convert, and got an error message instead of a file. Annoying, but almost every message has a simple cause and a clear remedy. This guide walks through the most common ones, in the order people tend to meet them.

The video is private or unlisted incorrectly

A private video can only be opened by accounts the owner chose, and the converter cannot reach it. If it is your own video, open YouTube Studio and change visibility to Unlisted or Public for the time of the conversion, then switch it back afterwards. Unlisted videos work as long as you have the link.

Age-restricted content

Videos flagged as age-restricted require a signed-in account to view, so the service cannot fetch them. If the video is yours, you can usually remove the restriction in its settings when it is not appropriate. Otherwise, there is no workaround here.

Region-blocked videos

Some videos are unavailable in certain countries because of rights agreements. If the block applies to the server's location, you will see a message that the video is unavailable. For your own video, check Visibility and Restrictions in YouTube Studio and review any territory limits.

Live streams and premieres

An ongoing live stream has no fixed length, so it cannot be converted. Wait until the broadcast ends and YouTube finishes processing the recording, which can take from a few minutes to some hours for long streams. Upcoming premieres behave the same way until they have aired.

Longer than 15 minutes

The converter accepts videos up to 15 minutes (900 seconds). Longer ones are rejected before any work starts. Options:

  1. Split your recording into parts before uploading.
  2. Publish a shorter cut, such as a trailer or highlight.
  3. Use an audio editor on the original file on your computer.

Our article on the duration limit in the blog goes deeper.

Too many conversions

Each IP address can run 10 conversions per hour. After the tenth, you get a message saying to wait. The window slides, so as the earliest conversion ages beyond an hour you gain capacity again. Planning your batch avoids this, and shared networks such as offices, schools or mobile carriers can use up the allowance faster than you expect.

The server is busy

At peak times, conversions queue. If the queue or disk is full, you may see a busy message. Wait a minute or two and try again. Do not refresh repeatedly, since that adds to the load.

The link is invalid

Check that the address points to a single video. Playlist links, channel pages and shortened addresses that did not resolve can cause errors. Copy the link from the browser bar when the video is open. If you do not have it, type a search phrase into the box and choose the correct result.

Format unavailable

Occasionally YouTube changes how streams are delivered, and the tool needs a short while to catch up. The service tries several methods on its own. If you still see a format message, try again after a few minutes.

Download expired

Generated files are deleted after one hour. If you open an old link, you get an expired message. Convert again, and download as soon as it is ready.

The file will not play

Make sure the download completed, since a partial file looks broken. Try another player. If the sound is tiny or has gaps, the source video itself may have a problem, which you can check by playing it on YouTube.

A quick troubleshooting order

  1. Open the video in a private browser window to see whether it plays without signing in.
  2. Check its duration is 15 minutes or less.
  3. Confirm it is not a live stream.
  4. Reload the converter and paste the link again.
  5. Wait a few minutes, then retry.
